this poem is for the black boys who were lost and is dedicated to morgan and the legacy of black schools, black culture, and black people.
does the catepillar know it’s a butterfly too?
that given time, it’s ugly awful appearance will transform
transcend
does the caterpillar know the ground is not forever.
that given time and place
she will rise above and float with such beauty
that even the birds would be jealous.
how can she do that?
transform.
does the caterpillar know that she just may be the rain in the drought
the harvest in famine
the flood in the desert
the good word in the last days of the world
the redeemer.
does the caterpillar know that her beauty is not for convenience
her construct is not for subservience
her life is not built for chains and shackles
and she is not made for the earth but for the skies.
does the caterpillar know that god flows through every cell in her goo.
and that once out of the cocoon
will ride on her wings.
