"Security" was written during a poetry club meeting where two poems were to be written about opposite feelings. "Security" is the poem opposite of "New". "Security" explains the stress that I went through during my first two years of college, working a job that I was losing interest and passion in, and worrying myself about how to be self-sufficient.
to not have to worry about bills
or how im gonna have my next meal
or finesse this five in my wallet
no stuntin no ballin
i don’t need it.
the best feeling in the world
is knowing that i have the security to buy a fresh pair of vans
or some shirts from the thrift
or some money for a lift in the
yellow cab when the rain is too much.
as opposed to the aching
breaking feeling
of overdrawn accounts and poverty
because knowing you’re poor is a hell of its own
walk a million miles in these shoes
and see if you can pull yourself up by the bootstraps
and you’ll see there were no laces to begin with.
security.
